Once, writing a story on some of Delhi’s best street food corners, I had interviewed the owner of Sita Ram Diwan Chand Choley Bhature in Paharganj, Delhi and he gave me a life lesson that stayed with me forever. He said, “We have always believed in serving good food at a reasonable price. One should not get out of the restaurant and say that the food was good but the price was high, that will be a spoiler.” This has stayed with me; some of the best food is found in a humble set-up at a very reasonable price. Not all reasonably priced food are good, but the joy is to discover one such place, and I found one during my recent trip to Mcleodganj.
Mcleodganj has too many cafes. I love café culture and some of its food, but it mostly comes with a price. The scene with Mcleodganj cafes are also same --- decent cafes offering an amazing view of the Dhauladhar range, but they are not places to eat your heart out.
Thanks to Tripadvisor, they have a category called cheap eats, and in that section for Mcleodganj, they have listed out a restaurant called – Kalimpong Restaurant. It’s a few minutes’ walk from the City Centre on Tipa Road.
Resting on a wooden plank, it has got four tables, but they are mostly occupied. The rush is so much that visitors don’t mind to share the table and that adds to the bonhomie. Managed by a few Tibetan ladies, who belong to Kalimpong in West Bengal, their beautiful smile, warm hospitality and fabulous cooking makes the restaurant a star attraction.
The menu is simple --- noodle, thupka and momos in three varients --- chicken, mutton and vegetable. I will not equate the taste with some of the plush Oriental restaurants, but there is simplicity and honesty in the taste. Not sure, if it is correct to describe taste with an adjective like honesty, but the sizeable portions and the reasonable price can be best described as honesty.
